At around 12:20pm today, several consecutive explosions were heard near the Westside plaza in Edinburgh. A strong smell of tarmac and black smoke was reported as coming from the direction of the building works at the front entrance the Westside Plaza. A police cordon is in effect from Wester Hailes Road to the Murrayburn Estate.
There have been ongoing roadworks and upgrades near the Westside Plaza for some months, with heavy machinery and construction vehicles in situ. Several local residents reported hearing a “gas canister explosion”.
A large number of police and ambulances were in attendance, for over an hour, with major traffic congestion on Wester Hailes Road
